We bused out of the highlands to the island of Penang, NW Malaysia. Its Britains attempt at what the Dutch did in Melaka. Its a big city, with not a lot happening. It felt passed it heyday, eerily quiet streets, shops covered with roller doors. We passed the time here, 3 nights staying with Chris who we met in the Highlands, and touristing around with a swiss girl. We took scooters around, and visited a snake temple (2 flat tyres later on chris's scooter) which was lame, though they had some cool spitting snakes in enclosures you could see for a small fee. Then we went as high as you can go on a scooter to a dam for great views of the city (but mainly for the winding roads which were fun to drive on) then to the largest buddhist temple in Malaysia, which had some spectacular parts.
